OFFENSE AGAINST PSYCHOSURGERY FUND
Woman Maimed by Lobotomy
A major malpractice suit has been brought against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and General Hospital (among others), for unnecessary and permanently damaging psychosurgery performed on a twenty year old lesbian, Marty Kapp, in 1974.
This psychosurgery (new name for lobotomy) was performed to experimentally change behavior. Both Marty and her mother were told it was a nonexperimental surgery to correct pain of neurological origin. Marty agreed to the surgery during the course of over 50 electric shock "treatments.” She was given the alternative of another seven years of hospitalization. Her original complaint--pain--was only dealt with as a "psychiatric" problem, and she was never given access to other than psychiatric remedies such as drugs, electric shock, neurosurgery. As a result, she now suffers many of the documented side effects of destroying several centimeters of brain tissue: severe loss of energy, inability to concentrate or to work, induced epilepsy, consisting of daily minor seizures and infrequent grand mal seizures, and damage of creative aptitudes and intelligence. She was an accomplished musician before, and now is just relearning. She is still in pain. And she has had the strength to survive.
grounds of malpractice, and invasion of first amendment rights. If so, it will provide a first and strong precedent--hopefully causing a drastic reduction in the number of lobotomies, making it clear to the medical profession that we will not tolerate anymore psychosurgery. As most victims of this "operation" are rendered horribly passive and even more disabled than Marty, all cases of this sort have ended at a very early stage. It is time to win one.

expenses. But the fees for medical witnesses, medical testing, traveling (some of the testing has to be done in Oregon), court costs, xerox costs, deposition costs, are estimated to be a least $20,000 over 3-5 years of intense battle. Support is needed "urgently.

Psychosurgeons are a powerful group of men. Recently the doctor responsible for Marty's surgery single-handedly defeated a bill in the Massachusetts legislature for very mild restrictions on psychosurgery. Hundreds of women, possibly thousands (psychosurgeons are notoriously lax in keeping records), are lobotomized every year, for displaying behavior "unnatural to women." In parts of Canada only women are allowed to undergo these "operations". It makes them better housewives, but men can't hold jobs afterwards. Marty Kapp was chosen for psychosurgery because she was a brilliant, outspoken, demanding lesbian, and in pain.
It has been very difficult to find anyone who would believe her story, or defend her with integrity. She has finally found a lawyer, Joan Rachlin, in Boston, who has organized three law firms and many law students on this case. For the first time, it appears that a suit brought against psychosurgeons may be successful. Suit is being brought both on the

MAX FACTOR ASSAULTS WOMEN
NEW YORK (LNS) Take one package of rape. Knead in some concern for the environment. Add a liberal pinch of "women's liberation." Half bake
in a public place, and wait for profits to grow.
With this recipe, Max Factor is hoping to cook up a national market for its new line of skin cleansers and moisturizers called "self-defense," using the slogan, "A PRETTY FACE ISN'T SAFE IN THIS CITY."
The multi-media promotion campaign "broke in 30 major U.S. markets this summer," according to Advertising Age, a trade journal of the ad industry. During the heavy summer rape season, which reaches its height in August, women in these 30 "markets" are receiving Max Factor's "warning"'' "Your face," reads the newspaper copy, mixing safety and environmental themes, "is under constant attack from pollution, smog, the dirt and grime in the air, heat and wind--all drying your skin, making it look older. But now, you can fight back, with Self Defense."
In New York City, as the "Son-of-Sam" was being sought for the murder of five young women and one man in random attacks over a year's time, the newly-posted subway message that "a pretty face isn't safe in this city" hit especially hard.
If the company succeeds with its new product, it will be doing well for its parent-corporation. The Norton-Simon conglomerate, of which Max Factor is a part, is one of the 200 largest industrial corporations in terms of sales, and includes Avis, Canada Dry, Halston Enterprises, McCall Patterns, Redbook, Norton Simon Communications, Somerset Importers, United Can Company, Wakefield Seafoods, and Talent Associates.
